Payroll Configuration

How do I define what payroll pays and deducts — and test the formulas before they run?

A payroll schema is the rulebook for a group of employees: its income items, deduction items, and withholdings, each fixed or formula-based. A built-in calculator tests the schema against sample values before it ever touches a live run.

Payroll Configuration

  1. Formula items with a test calculator

Income and deduction amounts can be formulas, evaluated against sample values in the configuration screen before saving.

  2. Categorized income and deduction items

Items are maintained by category, keeping schemas readable as they grow.

  3. Pay calendars, exempt and non-exempt

Payroll schedules are generated per staff class, with a preview before the calendar is saved.

  4. Pay grades on positions

Grade structures are maintained against positions, aligning pay configuration with the org model.

  5. Payslip template selection

The schema names the report template payslips are generated from after approval.

  6. Ledger mapping, preview only

Items map to general-ledger accounts to build a preview for Finance — no automatic posting is claimed.

How it works

Schemas are built in tabs that mirror how payroll people think: general information, income items, withholdings, and the ledger-account mapping. Items are organized by category and can carry formulas; the calculator tab evaluates the schema against test inputs so a formula error is caught at configuration time, not on payday.

Around the schema sit the structures a run needs: pay grades maintained per position, and pay calendars generated separately for exempt and non-exempt staff so period boundaries are records rather than conventions. The schema also names the payslip report template used when a period is approved — payslip layout is a designed template, not a hard-coded form.

Each schema maps its items to general-ledger accounts, which is what allows a run to produce a ledger preview for Finance. The preview is exactly that: continON does not post payroll to the ledger automatically, and the accounting decision stays with the accounting team.
