Bill of Materials
How do you define what a product is made of — components, planned waste, and cost — before production starts?
A bill of materials in continON is a set of component lines attached to a product on the shared item master, grouped into ordered production phases. Each line records the component article, its required quantity, its planned waste, and its cost.

How it works
The BOM is built per phase: each phase has a name, an order number, a type, and a facility, and carries its own component lines. A line points at another article from the same item master — the same record purchasing orders against and the warehouse ledger tracks — with a required quantity, an optional planned waste figure, and an optional cost. The BOM header also names the final product article and the warehouse the components are drawn from.
Documents can be attached directly to the BOM, so specifications and instructions live on the recipe rather than in a separate folder. Kits are handled separately: a compound-item structure groups articles that are sold or handled together without a production process, keeping assembly recipes and simple bundles distinct.
Because components are ordinary articles, everything already known about them applies — supplier links, lots and expiry settings, serial-number flags, and current stock in each warehouse. The item master also carries a dedicated manufacture barcode field for produced articles.
What the table carries
| # | Maintained | Resolved against it |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Component lines with quantity, waste, and cost | Every BOM line records required quantity, planned waste, and cost per component, giving the run a planned figure to confirm actuals against. |
| 02 | Phase-scoped structure | Lines belong to named, ordered phases tied to a facility, so the recipe already describes the sequence the production run will follow. |
| 03 | Documents on the recipe | Files attach to the BOM record itself, keeping drawings and instructions with the structure they describe. |
| 04 | Kits kept separate | Compound-item groupings cover articles bundled without production, so a sales kit never masquerades as a manufacturing recipe. |
| 05 | One item master | Components and finished products are the same article records used by purchasing, warehousing, and sales — no duplicate product data. |
What this touches
- Warehouse Management
Component availability and finished output are read from and recorded against the warehouse stock ledger. - Purchasing & Supply
Shortfall components are bought through the same request-to-order flow, against the same article records. - Production Planning
Plans inherit the BOM’s phases, components, and facility when a run is scheduled. - Documents
BOM attachments are stored and access-controlled by the platform document service.
